From the enchanting performances right down to the meticulously planned camera movements and clever lighting tricks, there isn't a single element of CITIZEN KANE that isn't a stunning achievement in all areas of filmmaking. There's more than a little Welles in the character, and, when one examines the direction the film maker's life took after Kane, the similarities become more obvious.

Citizen Kane United States, Some long-lost, unrequited love? The deep focus photography that gives Kane its theatrical look was one of his innovations. And, while Hearst was offended by Welles' characterization of him, he was supposedly more angered by Kane's unflattering portrayal of his beloved mistress, Marion Davies who is represented in the film by Susan Alexander.

He spent the rest of his life coming up with one excuse or another for why he never came close to that level of achievement again. And, while Welles' Shakespeare movies and A Touch of Evil contain elements of brilliance, they are not on the same level as Kane. While the characters never reveal the meaning of "Rosebud," the viewer is permitted to solve that mystery.

The film takes the view that wealth and power are inherently destructive of human values. Some maintain that his cut of The Magnificent Ambersons was more powerful, but the studio took the film away from him, slashing more than 40 minutes of footage.

But the answer only proves that there are never any simple answers to the complexity of the human spirit. This film was his first venture into movie making after the infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast that threw America into an uproar.

Hearst, offended by his portrayal, offered RKO a small fortune to destroy the film. Even though the plot unfolds by jumping in and out of nonlinear flashbacks, it is surprisingly easy to keep track of.
